How does it work?

To drive the relay the circuit utilizes the CMOS IC CD 4001 / 4011, the input gate 1 of which is connected to the probe that detects water levels. One probe is connected to the ground and another one to gate 1 of the IC. There after, the input of gate 1 remains high, the relay driver transistor begins conducting, and the output pin 4 goes high as the probe A connected to the IC gate 1, gets floating. The relay stays on as the NO contacts of the relay and power supply are connected to the common. With the rise of the water levels, probes and A and B come into contact, the relay de-energizes and the output of the IC turns low. All working of the relay can be visualized with the help of an LED.

Initially, the input pin1 of the IC is at logic high and the output at pin3 will be at logic low according to the NOR gate truth table and A and B are not connected when the water level is low. Input to other NOR gate will also be logic low signals because pin3 is shorted to pins 5 and 6. The corresponding output pin 4 gives a logic high signal and as current flows through the resistor to the base of the transistor conduction is initiated and it begins acting as a closed switch.

Thus, current flows through probes A and B as they are connected through the water when the level of the water rises.
